Adult Acne.Acne is heartbreaking disfiguring disease that can occur in people almost any age, regardless of gender and skin type.
Dermatologists know that the age range of two to six years is considered the acne free zone, during which acne vulgaris (common acne) rarely occurs. Even newborns can develop acne, possibly due to hormonal changes that occur as the fetus develops. Although it has not yet been definitely determined why elderly people do not develop acne, it may have to do with the decrease in hormonal activity that comes with advancing age. Despite the fact, that acne can strike at nearly any age, it is firmly ensconced in our collective consciousness as an adolescent disease. For decades, both acne treatments and advertising have been almost exclusively directed at this age group. Television and magazines are rife with images of teenage angst-adolescent boys and girls peering in their mirrors as they attempt to cover up unsightly blemishes. However, any dermatologist can tell you, this is only half the story. Acne affects almost as many women and men in their late twenties, thirties, and forties as it does adolescents. Since adult skin is much different then adolescent skin, treatments that are effective for adolescent acne are usually unacceptable for adults, particularly adult women. |
