Problematic nails:WEAK NAILS The strength of your nails is by and large a product of good old DNA. Look at your parents, cousins, children: Do they have weak nails too? If so then don't fight the nature. The best way to keep your nails healthy and attractive is to keep them short and well groomed, with rounded corners that are supported by your nail bed-no overhang. And one more solution to keep them strong is always to add a layer of strength-ending base coat and polish. If your family's nails aren't weak, or if you are convinced there's got to be more to it, take a look at what you are feeding your nails. Like your hair, your nails are made primarily of keratin, which is fibrous protein. And just as your diet can affect the lustrousness of your hair or the clarity of your skin, a balance intake of vitamins, proteins, and calcium will help strengthen your fingernails. Along with a diet rich of calcium, make sure that you are getting a balance of other vitamins, especially vitamin E. RIDGES ![]() Ridge nails can be caused by any number of factors: hormones, genes, or some sort of behavior that affects the surface of the nail. There are a lot of different types of ridges and they fall into a few broad categories. If your nails are ridge but otherwise strong, the ridges most likely take the form of a ripply irregularity in the surface of the nail. These ridges are a piece of cake to take care of. Simply smooth the surface of the nail with a buffing block or disk, using an X-shaped motions (from the lower left to the nail to the upper right, and then from the lower right to the upper left). The ridges will come back as the nails grow out, but you can always buff them away again. In weak nails, ridges are “furrows” ridges from root to tip that split and break once they grow past the end of the nail bed. In this case, there isn't much to choice beyond wearing your nails short enough to keep the tips from splitting. A binding agent- even a simple coat of clear nail polish- is a perfect oat of armor: It will help reinforce the nail and offset its propensity for splitting. Avoid buffing the top of your nails need all the structure they can get. Rubbing your fingertips across the top of your nail plate, from stress or boredom, can cause ridges too. It's not a bad habit as biting your nails. And you also can do a full bluff, smoothing out the ridges and moisturizing the nails to help break the habit. If your nails have been healthy and beautiful all your life and then ridges suddenly appear, check with your physician. It can be caused by a nutritional imbalance or a hormonal fluctuation, or it can be a side effect of certain medications. SPLIT NAIL ![]() Whether your nails are weak and prone to splitting or you have perfectly healthy nails that you just happen to occasionally use as power tools, you'll need to learn how to take care of a split. -If the split is just on the tip (it doesn't reach the nail bed) use your clippers to trim off both sides of the broken nail, and then file the tip down evenly. If there is a disparity between the length of your nail and the others, take a deep breath and trim those too. Nails always look more elegant when they are even, rather than at irregular lengths. -If the split goes all the way to your nail bed, trim the tip to the edge of your finger and then wash your hands with antibacterial soap. Once your hands are fully dry, apply Neosporin to the damaged nail, followed by an adhesive bandage to protect from further damage. WHITE SPOTS Everyone gets them and everyone freaks out about them. And the reasons we're given for them are seemingly infinite. Is it a calcium or zinc deficiency? Is it a sign that you are unhealthy or not exercising or getting old? None of the above!-It is basically a bruise: a mark that appears when you bang your nail slightly, often without even knowing it, and disrupt the new nail tissue that's forming in the matrix. Let it grow out, and treat it as normal part of your nail. |
